There’s something that just feels right about plopping down on your couch, a plate of nachos sitting on the coffee table in front of you as you flip on the television and watch the Monday Night Football logo appear on the screen.

The first workday of the workweek. Mondays. Ugh, right?

But then there’s professional football in the evening, just in time to let you relax a little bit and let the whole day just fade away behind you.

It’s been a tradition since 1970, and it was, for a long time, the only primetime NFL game you would be able to find each week. That, of course, has changed with the introduction of both Sunday Night Football and Thursday Night Football over the past decades.

We’ve assembled this guide to betting on MNF so you can learn how to bet on them legally and safely in NY, and much more.

Those who assemble the schedules have always tried to give fans the best possible primetime matchups to watch. Sure, there will always be some misses and disappointing games, but for the most part, the NFL has done well in making sure the Monday night game is worth staying up past your bedtime for. From a NY sports betting perspective, the Buffalo Bills play two MNF games in 2022, while the New York Giants play one. The New York Jets will not make a Monday Night Football appearance in 2022. What are the main bets for MNF?

One of the best aspects of betting on a primetime Monday game is the fact that (most weeks) there is only one game being played. That means you don’t have to divide your attention among multiple NFL games. And you’re not the only one. Betting on the NFL, specifically, MNF games gets a lot attention, and fans are watching from across the globe. It is, after all, the last game of the week, and then there will be a lull for a few days.

The three major bet types — moneylines, point spreads and totals — are the ones that get the most attention from bettors, as usual. But that doesn’t mean those are the only NFL bets available. You can also get involved with Monday Night Football prop bets and even live betting (we’ll discuss that more below).

For a very brief example of each of the three main bet types, we’ll use the New York Giants against the Philadelphia Eagles as the game we’re focusing on.

In moneyline bets, the question you need to answer is a relatively simple one on the surface: Which team is going to win? When you see the listing for the bet on your sportsbook app, it might look something like this:

• New York Giants (-120)
• Philadelphia Eagles (+110)

What those numbers tell us is the G-men are slight favorites to win. A $120 bet on the New York Giants would get you $100 if the Giants do win. Conversely, a $100 bet on the Eagles would lead to a $110 return if they win.

With point spread bets, the idea is still pretty much the same. This time, however, oddsmakers have determined which team they think will win and by how much.

• New York Giants -3.5 (-110)
• Philadelphia Eagles +3.5 (-110)

The Giants are favored to win by 3.5 points. If you were to take a bet on them and they won by four or more points, then you’d have a winning slip in hand. If they win but by fewer than four points, then you’d lose your bet, as you would if the Giants lost the game outright. On the other hand, if you wager on the Eagles, they either have to win outright or lose by fewer than three points. In both of those bets, it would take a $110 wager to win $100.

Now for the totals bets — also known as over/unders — you’ll see that sportsbooks have assigned a combined final score. You don’t have to pick the winner of the game, just if the point total at the end of the contest will be higher or lower than predicted.

Here’s an example for the Giants-Eagles game in which oddsmakers have set the line at 42.5 points:

• Over 42.5 (-110)
• Under 42.5 (-110)

If you think the offenses are capable of putting up 43 points or more between them, then you’d go with the over. If you think they’ll fail in that quest, then choose the under. Either way, in this example, if you wager $110, you could win $100 if your pick is correct.

MNF live betting

Live betting, which is also known as in-game betting, is a relatively new way to wager. It really came along with online and mobile sports betting, and it has boomed in popularity in recent years. We can expect that as more states allow legal sports betting within their borders, the popularity of live betting will continue to grow, as well.

One of our favorite things about live betting is the interaction it allows between you and the game you’re watching. As the action unfolds on your screen, you can make bets on a variety of options, such as who will score next, if there will be an interception on this drive, or who will lead at the end of the quarter or half. When it comes to Buffalo Bills odds, live betting might be the best way to get value with the added excitement.

Betting at an online sportsbook or app is a must if you want to enjoy live betting. The truth is that retail betting locations just don’t have the ability to keep up with the constantly adjusting odds that live betting presents. Platforms such as the DraftKings app, FanDuel app and Caesars app all allow you to stay on top of the action without missing out.

Make sure you’re using a legal sportsbook, though. Illicit offshore books offer no protections for you if something happens to your winnings or, worse, your bank account. By using regulated sportsbooks, you have the protection of your state’s gambling oversight agency.

MNF betting tips and strategy

The first tip is to not overlook the historical record of the teams for Monday Night Football games. Some teams and players just perform very well in primetime, while others can’t seem to get their game together enough to be effective. Research those teams and their MNF histories.

Another thing to consider is the schedule for both teams. Did one just come off a bye week? Does a team have a bye week following the Monday night matchup? Has one team been on a grueling run against some of the best teams in the NFL? Consider those factors when you’re doing your handicapping.

If you haven’t tried live betting yet, Monday Night Football games are a good place to start. You can focus primarily on a single game, you can see the action on your screen while you’re wagering, and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to make a variety of wagers.

Finally, stick to your bankroll. If you went all out for Sunday games and you’ve left yourself with just a little spending money for the Monday contest, don’t go over just because you want to get more bets in for the final game of the week. We also don’t suggest you use your entire bankroll for Monday, even if the game is attractive. Be mindful of what you’re spending and where, so you’re better able to adjust your betting strategies when needed.

Like we mentioned above, some players and teams just really step up for a primetime game, and the numbers showcase that. Some of these records are very modern (hello, Patrick Mahomes) while others date back quite a bit (we see you, Bo Jackson, Earl Campbell and Eric Dickerson).

• Most passing touchdowns: Six, from Patrick Mahomes when his Chiefs took on the Rams on Nov. 19, 2018.
• Most passing yards: 517, from Tom Brady when he led the Patriots against the Dolphins on Sept. 12, 2011.
• Receptions: 14, from two great receivers in Herman Moore and Jerry Rice. Both did so in 1995.
• Rushing touchdowns: Four, from a trio of some of the best runners of all time in Earl Campbell (1978), Eric Dickerson (1988) and Emmitt Smith (1995).
• Rushing yards: 221, from Bo Jackson when his Raiders played the Seahawks on Nov. 30, 1987.
• Total yards gained: 289, by Jerry Rice when his 49ers took on the Vikings on Dec. 18, 1995.
• Biggest comeback victory: Jets 40, Dolphins 37 in overtime on Oct. 23, 2000. The New York Jets trailed 30-7 heading into the fourth quarter. They put up 30 points while holding Miami to just seven. New York, which was at home, won on a field goal in OT in a game that became known as the “Monday Night Miracle.”

Where can I watch Monday Night Football in NY?

The home of the Monday primetime game is none other than ESPN, which has had exclusive broadcast rights since 2006, taking over from ABC, which had it from 1970 until 2005. Both companies are owned by the Walt Disney Co. The games typically start at 8:15 p.m. ET, though during the Week 1 double-header the first game starts at 7 p.m. ET and the second follows around 10 p.m.

MNF broadcast crew

ESPN finally has a broadcasting crew worthy of Monday Night Football. The longtime pairing of Joe Buck and Troy Aikman make the move from Fox to ESPN in 2022. This is arguably the best MNF broadcast crew since Al Michaels and John Madden in the early 2000s.

5 memorable MNF moments

Monday Night Football has created a bit of a legend for itself thanks to some amazing games and moments that have been replayed and then replayed some more over the past decades. We’ve put together five of our favorites to share with you.

1. Bo knows domination

First up is the amazing day Bo Jackson had in the Raiders’ Week 13 matchup against the Seahawks on Nov. 30, 1987.

Jackson was well on his way to being a household name for NFL fans, and his performance of 221 yards with two touchdowns against Seattle just secured that status. Jackson happened to be celebrating his 25th birthday that day, and he sure blew the candles out for Seahawks fans as the Raiders ran away with the game, 37-14. You can catch some highlights here.

2. Green Bay gets Mossed

Randy Moss had a lot of competition when it came to the receiver role in Minnesota when he first arrived. That didn’t stop him from having a breakout day in Week 5 of the 1998 season against rival Green Bay on Oct. 5.

It was one of those games with a lot of exciting moments, two great quarterbacks and a ton of talent. Somehow, Moss still stood out. Moss scored two touchdowns and had 190 receiving yards — on just five receptions. It was the start of something beautiful for Vikings fans, and a thorn for the Packers faithful. 3. NFL history from the 1-yard line

It was 1983, and the Dallas Cowboys were visiting the Minnesota Vikings. In the backfield was Tony Dorsett, who trotted onto the field with his team standing in a precarious position on the 1-yard line.

Dorsett was no doubt tasked with giving his team a little breathing room when he took the ball from quarterback Danny White, ran to his left and then was given a massive hole by his offensive line. Dorsett made the most of it, setting the NFL record for the longest play from scrimmage with a 99-yard touchdown run. Sure, this is just a single moment from a game the Cowboys lost, 31-27, but it doesn’t change the fact that it is one of the greatest plays in all of NFL history. Check out the run here.

4. Brett Favre honors his father

It is always hard to understand how a professional athlete can take the field following the death of a parent, but Brett Favre, who was still a shining star with Green Bay at the time, came to play despite the death of his father the previous day.

The Monday Night Football game was hosted by the Oakland Raiders on Dec. 22, 2003. Favre came out and put up the best performance of his entire career, scoring four touchdowns with 399 yards passing. His quarterback rating stood at 154.9 as his Packers rolled the Raiders, 41-7. You can see the highlights here.

5. Black-cat blues for Giants

Not every Monday Night Football moment has to be a spectacular play, right? Well, we think so at least. That’s why we’ve decided to highlight the game from Nov. 4, 2019, when the New York Giants hosted the Dallas Cowboys. The Giants were in the lead in the primetime NFC East showdown when a black cat suddenly burst on the field, causing officials to call a time out while workers (including police) tried to wrangle the feline.

The cat was too elusive, however, and escaped capture before disappearing under the stadium seats. The Giants were already cursed, though, and fell to their rivals, 37-18. Watch as Kevin Harlen calls the game with the cat on the field.
