Could New York Challenge Nevada For No. 1 In Super Bowl 56 Betting Handle?

New York projects to do very well on its first-ever Super Bowl Sunday featuring online sports betting on Feb. 13.

But will it finish No. 1 in handle?

According to projections from PlayUSA analyst Eric Ramsey, Nevada will produce the largest Super Bowl handle at $175 million. New York is projected to finish second, generating $160 million.

New Jersey ($130 million projection) will also be a state to watch, making it essentially a three-horse race.

Nevada holds the current record for sports betting handle during the Super Bowl with $158.6 million wagered in the state, set in 2018 as the Philadelphia Eagles upset the New England Patriots 41-33 in Super Bowl LII.

Why Nevada could finish No. 1 in Super Bowl betting

New York is suddenly the largest legal market in the country, and there’s a strong argument to be made for putting it at the top of this list.

But Nevada is in the middle of its own growth spurt. Its gambling industry is built for big events like this. And it has so far retained its crown as the king of Super Bowl betting.

PlayUSA believes it’s going to set another record to hang onto the top spot for one more year.

That being said, New York has already broken the measuring stick with its unprecedented early success. It certainly wouldn’t be a surprise if it surpasses Nevada and pushes closer to $200 million. It might even be the safer bet.

Addabbo has high hopes for Super Bowl in New York

In less than a month since launch, NY online sports betting is poised to shatter the monthly record for overall sports betting handle of $1.3 billion set by New Jersey in Oct. 2021.

Despite betting apps went live Jan. 8, New York has already generated nearly $1.2 billion in handle through Jan. 23.

“Certainly breaking a monthly record is within reach, so to have that kind of handle, it’s obtainable for New York,” Sen. Joe Addabbo told playin-ny. “So we’ll see. We could have more online sportsbooks active (six to eight), and it’s the event of the year for sports betting. So New York has positioned itself due to the great work of the NYS Gaming Commission to get us to this point prior to the Super Bowl so many weeks out.

“We’re primed to make some historical numbers.”
